The Executive Committee of the International Society of Olympic Historians (ISOH) decided in 2003 to implement a proposal by Past-President Bill Mallon to introduce awards for outstanding research on the Olympic Movement and Olympic history. Inaugurated in 2005, the awards have been given annually.
ISOH donates four awards annually:
- ISOH Ian Buchanan Memorial Scholarship for a graduate student doing research into Olympic history. Amount US$ 5,000.
- ISOH award for the best monograph on the Olympic Movement and Olympic history published in the previous year. Amount US$ 500.
- ISOH award for the best article published in the Journal of Olympic History during the previous year. Amount US$ 250.
- ISOH award for the life’s work of an Olympic historian.
§2 Ian Buchanan Memorial Scholarship
The Ian Buchanan Memorial Scholarship can be used for financing research visits in archives, costs of publishing, or translations into English – with a maximum of US$2,000 per applicant.
The applicant should not be older than 40 years and should be registered at a known University.
Material to be submitted by the applicant
- Curriculum Vitae
- Transcript of the highest degree
- Detailed research statement
- Time schedule for research project
- Three letters of references by Olympic researchers
- Declaration of consent to report on the research results in the Journal of Olympic History
Terms and Conditions will be published on the Website of ISOH and in the first issue of each year. Deadline to apply is April 1. The complete application materials, in five copies, should be sent to the Secretary General. After a first selection process three candidates will be nominated by the Award Committee. The Award Committee appoints a committee consisting of three experts for the final review process. On the basis of the reports of the committee of experts, the Award Committee will make its decision.
§3 Monograph Award
The Award Committee of ISOH collects monographs on Olympic History published in the previous year and makes a first selection. The chosen monographs are then reviewed by a committee consisting of three experts who are nominated by the Award Committee. The winner of the award agrees to publish an article on the research results in his monograph in the Journal of Olympic History.
§4 Journal of Olympic History Article Award
The Award Committee of ISOH and the editorial board of the Journal of Olympic History nominate the best article published in the Journal of Olympic History.
§5 ISOH Medal
The Award Committee of ISOH nominates a distinguished Olympic historian.
§6 Award Committee
The Award Committee is responsible for the organisation of the awards. Members of the Award Committee are the president, vice-president, secretary general, treasurer and the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Olympic History. Members of the Award Committee, the Executive Committee of ISOH and members of the editorial team of the Journal of Olympic History will not be eligible to receive any of the awards except the ISOH medal.
§7 Celebration Ceremony
The winners are invited to a celebration ceremony at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne or during one of the scientific congresses on Olympic matters. The awards will be presented by the President of ISOH.
