Conrado Durantez wins IOA Award

by Philip Barker

The International Olympic Academy (IOA) has made a special award to Olympic education pioneer and ISOH member Dr Conrado Durantez “for his contribution to the Olympic movement.”

The presentation was made by IOA President Isidoros Kouvelos during the International Session for National Olympic Academies’ and National Olympic Committees held at Ancient Olympia.

Durantez had attended the inaugural IOA Session in 1961.

In 1968 he founded the Spanish Olympic Academy, the first to be established at national level.

He was also founding President of the Pan-Iberian Association of Olympic Academies.

A prolific author on Olympism in a career of over 60 years, he accompanied the Olympic Torch on its journey from Europe to Mexico in 1968.

His works include two extensive histories of the Olympic Torch Relay and a study of the Games in Ancient Olympia.

In 2021, he had been a special guest at the Ceremonies to mark the re-opening of the IOA after major modernisation work.
