The International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has hailed the decision to award the  2028 Winter Youth Olympics to Dolomiti Valtellina as an “expression of the IOC’s confidence in Italy’s ability to deliver world class, exceptional winter sports events.”

The formal vote was taken during the Extraordinary IOC Session held at the Olympic House in Lausanne.

89 voted in favour with one against and two abstained.

“The Olympic Movement and the host regions are already excited about Milano Cortina 2026, with just over one year to go until the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Today’s news means that excitement will extend until the end of the decade, and the benefits for local communities will continue,” Bach added.

The Dolomiti Valtellina delegation had taken part in “Targeted Dialogue” last year before the IOC Executive Board recommended that they be chosen.

Italian Olympic Committee President  Giovanni Malagò led a delegation which included Minister for Sport Andrea Abodi.

“Italy is once again ready to put its heart, passion and expertise into hosting an event that will be not only a spectacular sporting occasion, but also a meaningful opportunity for growth for the entire nation. We aim to inspire the younger generations to embrace the value of sport as a tool for inclusion and social cohesion,” Abodi insisted.

The Games have been scheduled to run from January 15th to 29th 2028. They will be the fourth Winter Youth Olympic Games held in Europe.

The IOC  Session was the first full gathering  to be held in Olympic House.

Previous online sessions have been led from the building.

In a behind closed doors presentation which preceded the session, members also heard addresses from the seven candidates for the IOC Presidency.

The vote is scheduled to take place at the Greek resort of Costa Navarino on March 20th.
