Hellenic Olympic Committee Elects New President

by Philip Barker

The Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) have elected International Olympic Academy (IOA) President Isidoros Kouvelos as their new President.

“My experience in the HOC, first as Vice President and then as President of the IOA, where globally recognized work was accomplished, fills me with responsibility for the future,” said Kouvelos.

“The key areas of the HOC, Olympic preparation, Olympic Education, the Olympic Torch Relay, and the IOA are crucial. The IOA, as a mirror of the Olympic Movement, promotes the Values of Olympism, knowledge, respect, and diversity. The competition must always be fair and clean.”

He succeeds International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Spyros Capralos who held the position for the preceding 16 years.

Kouvelos is the latest to hold the position in a lineage which dates back to the foundation of the HOC in 1894 when Crown Prince Constantine was named the first President of the new organisation.

He  will in turn be succeeded as IOA President by Charis Tsolakis, an associate professor and fencing coach at the University of Athens.

Kouvelos had led the IOA since 2009, a period which included the renovation of the premises at Ancient Olympia.

Meanwhile, Athens 2004 gold medal winning gymnast Dimosthenes Tampakos has been elected President of the Hellenic Olympic Academy.
