Work has begun on relaying the track at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens which staged the first Olympics of the Modern Era in 1896.

The Hellenic Olympic Committee have described it as a “major upgrade” which will “further enhance its historic and cultural significance.”

Bulldozers are removing the old running track which is to be replaced with a new German-made surface which conforms to World Athletics standards. It is expected that the new track will be in the colours of the Greek flag and it is hoped that the stadium will host a Diamond League event in 2027.

“The restoration and upgrade of the historic Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games were held, will enable the venue to host a Diamond League athletics meeting in 2027,” said HOC President Isidoros Kouvelos.

The stadium lighting will also receive an upgrade and the marble surfaces of the stadium will also be cleaned.

“Preserving our heritage must always remain a top priority. Through these projects, the Hellenic Olympic Committee reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting, upgrading and promoting the unique stadium in the world that is built entirely of white marble,” Kouvelos added.

The work has been underwritten by billionaire shipping magnate Evangelos Marinakis, owner of Olympiakos and Nottingham Forest through his Capital and Maritime Corp.

The initiative is part of an extensive sponsorship deal with the Hellenic Olympic Committee.

At Athens 2004, the stadium hosted the archery events and was the setting for the finish of both marathons.
