ISOH GA Opens in Istanbul

Turkey Olympic Committee (TOC) President Ahmet Gulum has spoken of his dream to host the 2036 Olympics at the opening of the ISOH General Assembly (GA) in Istanbul.
“I believe we are the best candidate for the 2036 Olympics and we can get connections across the sporting world,” he said.
Gulum, who made his name in volleyball with Galatasaray, was elected TOC President in March this year.
“We have a new President and a new National Olympic Committee President. The Olympics can change a lot of things and we can do a lot of things in my country with the 2036 Olympics.
Istanbul is set to host the 2027 European Games.
“This is a very big experience for us, it will be the first time that we have organised a big multi-sport event of this type in my city.”
Istanbul is expected to face a tough competition from Ahmedabad, Doha, and Santiago in the race to host the Games.
Professor Ibrahim Yildiran began the formal presentations with a fascinating survey of Turkey’s Olympic and sporting heritage from ancient times to the modern Games.
His lecture provided a survey of the ancient Games and the development of sport, and Turkish attitudes to the revival of the Olympics in Athens in 1896. He also recounted the first Turkish participation, the contact made with Pierre de Coubertin and the eventual foundation of a National Olympic Committee.
The GA is set to continue with the Presentation of the ISOH Lifetime achievement award to Frantisek Kolar.
Some 30 members and guests joined in person for the session in Istanbul. The main presentations are also being streamed live online throughout the weekend.
Amongst those present was Alex Iscru, winner of the inaugural ISOH poster competition with Mihaela Mitu. This had been organised in conjunction with the International Olympic Academy earlier this summer.
