“Agones,” a television documentary about the revival of the Olympics, has been given a special award by the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) at a special gala event held in the Olympic headquarters in Athens.

“We honour those who with their work and actions promote Olympism. It is a unique documentary,” said HOC President Spyros Capralos.

The documentary explores the connections between Greek national identity and the restoration of the Olympics for the Modern era. It includes sequences shot in Ancient Olympia and Athens and features an interview with IOC President Thomas Bach.

It was produced and presented by Katerina Anastassopoulou, a journalist with the Greek state television service ERT.

There were also awards for Giannis Mamouzelos for his work in producing The Olympic book of Greek Athletics; and George, Dionysios and Alexis Liveris the authors of an Encyclopaedic Dictionary of the Olympic Games.

The event also honoured the most recent Greek Olympic champions. Long jumper Miltiadis Tentoglou and sculler Stefanos Ntouskos both won gold in Tokyo.

The HOC’s own Vikelas award, named after the first IOC President, was presented to veteran television presenter Alexis Kostalas who has been the regular master of ceremonies at the Flame lighting Ceremonies for over three decades. “He unhesitatingly offers his services without hesitation in cold and heat, rain and sun,” Capralos told an audience which included Greek State President Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

There was also a presentation to the Flame Ceremony Choreographer Artemis Ignatiou, High Priestess Xanthi Georgiou, composer Yiannis Psimadas and other  team members for their “participation and excellence at the traditional Flame Lighting and Handover Ceremonies.
