Olympic Values and Artificial Congress Fulfils Paris Pledge
by Philip Barker at the Palazzo di Lombardia in Milan
Participants from across the world have joined a conference on “Olympic Values and Artificial Intelligence” organised by ISOH in conjunction with the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee, (IPCC) the International Fair Play Commission and Panathlon International.
“It will explore how artificial intelligence is shaping research, education, ethics, and the future of the Olympic Movement.” Organisers promised.
The topic had been considered last year at the International Olympic Academy, another organisation at the heart of Olympic education.
“AI is the torch, but the Torchbearer is human,” insisted Hilla Davidov of the IPCC.
“AI has incredible potential but without Olympic values, the boat has no direction” she added.
The conference fulfilled a pledge given in Paris to promote greater cooperation between major organisations involved in promoting Olympic history. It was moderated by Professor Gary Rhodes of California State University.
“From my perspective the most important thing is to use AI to engage the youth and next generation,” said Professor Bianca Pena Gama of the University of Rio de Janeiro and a member of four of the associations responsible for organising the session.
“You could use a chat bot with a Pierre de Coubertin image to teach professors all over the world” she suggested. “It is easier when you go inside the platforms we already have, instead of creating another platform engaging with our content.”
Professor Ian Robertson from the Centre for Philosophy and AI intelligence research at Friedrich Alexander University in Nuremberg introduced Artificial Intelligence and Ethical Values.
Alejandro Merino Madrid, Head of AI technology for the International Olympic Committee and Giuseppe Deleonaris, the IOC’s Ethics and Compliance officer spoke on AI in sporting integrity initiatives.
Delegates also heard from Sabine Haller- Neumann, head of archives at the Olympic Studies centre on how records, photographs and other images are preserved for the future.
IPCC President Stephan Wassong and ISOH President Christian Wacker also made presentations at the conference.
