The cauldron has burned in both Milan and Cortina D’Ampezzo during these Winter Olympics in what organisers have described as a “powerful symbol of harmony.”

The design was inspired by the work of Leonardo da Vinci and depicts his geometric shapes.

It was the brainchild of Ceremony director Marco Balich working with Operatic set designer Paolo Fantin and creative director Lida Castelli.

It is intended to “pay homage to the sun as the primary source of life, energy and renewal.”

It has been made from aeronautical aluminium by Games sponsors Fincantieri, a leading Italian ship building company.

Alberto Tomba and Deborah Compagnoni lit the cauldron in Milan at the Arco della Pace (Arch of peace) close to the Parco Sempione.

In Cortina at the Piazza Dibona, Sofia Goggia was chosen to light the cauldron. She was destined to win bronze in the downhill at the Games to add to her gold from 2018 and silver in 2022.

In Milan visitors have been attracted by the nightly spectacle of movement and light.

Every hour the cauldron animates as “Olympia” a special piece by Italian composer Roberto Cacciapaglia. The diameter of the cauldron expands from 3.1 metres to 4.5 metres when open during the display.

The Paralympic Flame will also be ignited in both locations on March 6.
